North Branch Grants 06

Issue:
St-George road crossing NB Grants brook over an old bridge. Department of Transportation closed the bridge because the North side of the bridge is collapsing and the structure is unstable. Some people removed the barriers in order to use the road. The wood used for the bridge contains creozote. Camps on each side of the river with short cut grass up to the stream banks. The stream banks show a lot of signs of erosion. ATV crossing upstream from the bridge.
Action Required:
The bridge should be fixed or replaced with a new structure. The approach to a ford can be stabilized using clean crushed rock on top of a geotextile. Landowner education on the importance of maintaining an adequate buffer zone on their property. The stream banks should be stabilized in order to slow down erosion and reduce sedimentation in the river.

Update:
The bridge was removed but the ATV crossing is still present. Rip-rap to stabilize the banks and discourage the ATV crossing would be necessary.
