Algae in river bed

Belledune 09

Friday, July 29, 2011

Issue:

Three metal culverts (2.10 m) that cross well used forestry road used by NB Power to acces their pumping station upstream. Riverbed is filled with long filamentous green algae (big proliferation of algae). Light erosion, tree removal and some waste noted in area. Rip-rap on sides of the bank to prevent erosion.

Action Required:

Landowner education on the importance of maintaining an adequate buffer zone on their property. A ‘‘Erosion protection’’ and/or ‘‘No dumping’’ sign should be erected near the site. The banks should be stabilized in order to slow down erosion and reduce sedimentation into the lake.

Update

August 11 2017

Update:

The group visited the site and vegetation has grown on the banks but a large proliferation of algae is still present in the bed of the river.
